Can any skis be touring skis?

Can any skis be touring skis?

Technically, you can use most any ski for backcountry touring as long as you have boots and bindings that allow you to lift your heels to walk (“skin”) uphill (with the help of climbing skins) and then to lock them back into the bindings for the descent.

Do you need special skis for ski touring?

Whilst you can use pretty much any alpine ski for touring (if it allows you to fit skins), skis specially designed for touring are generally lighter weight and have a profile and camber which works well for off piste and for skinning uphill.

How do I choose skis for ski touring?

Choose a ski that weighs between 2kg and 2.5kg per pair with a deck width of somewhere between 72 and 80mm. In terms of length, opt for skis up to around 10 cm shorter than your actual height. To maintain their performance, these skis must be used with very lightweight bindings.

Should touring skis be longer or shorter?

In general, we advise our customers to size alpine touring skis a bit shorter than a alpine resort ski. This helps reduce the overall setup weight for uphill travel and allows you to have more maneuverability while skiing in variable backcountry conditions.

What size skis for ski touring?

Touring skis should be 5-15cm less than the skier’s height. Touring ski length is a balance between lightweight maneuverability on the way up and stability on the way down. Freeride skis should be at least the skier’s height and can easily be 5-15cm longer for skilled skiers.

Can you downhill ski with backcountry skis?

Many telemark skiers use backcountry skis. You can use this gear and technique at a downhill ski resort or in the backcountry. If you choose to head into the backcountry, you need some additional equipment, such as climbing skins and avalanche safety equipment, as well as proper avalanche training.

Is ski touring hard?

Certainly, ski touring can be hard work, with a lot of effort needed on the uphill sections. However, the effort is well worth it: the thrill of making first tracks on a long descent, well away from the rest of the ski world with the wild splendour of the winter mountains all around.

How big should touring skis be?

How tall should my touring skis be?

10 to 20cm under your height is about right. In general, tall or big skiers will have skis arouns 160cm, shorter skiers will stick with 150cm lengths. If you like climbing on the side of groomed slopes, you can add a few centimeters in order to gain comfort and stability on the downhill.

How wide should a touring ski be?

For classic touring skis, a waist width of 85-95 mm has proven to be the best choice. It combines relatively good floatation with stability and easy hiking. Skis with a width of less than 80 mm usually weigh less and offer good handling characteristics in hard snow or in spring snow.

How heavy should touring skis be?

For everyday ski touring or ski mountaineering, I like to stay above 1400 grams for my skis. For me personally, 1500–1600 grams is a good target for a ski-mountaineering ski while a few hundred grams heavier tends to work well for mid-winter / powder touring.

What does touring mean in skiing?

Ski touring is skiing in the backcountry on unmarked or unpatrolled areas. Touring is typically done off-piste and outside of ski resorts, and may extend over a period of more than one day.
