What happens if your distributor is off?
A faulty engine distributor won’t spark, which will either prevent the engine from starting or cause it a running engine to fail. In order for the ignition system to work properly it is important to keep the engine distributor operating at maximum efficiency.
How do you tell if your distributor is 180 out?
You can determine if it is 180 out by removing #1 plug and placing your finger/thumb over the hole. (Temporarily remove the wire from the coil first) Have someone “tap” the starter and you will feel pressure trying to to blow your finger away. This is the compression stroke. Note the direction of engine rotation.
Can a distributor jump timing?

Your distributer can’t be a tooth off, that’s an old myth. on some cars (not the mustang) the dizzy is held in place and only allowed to turn a fixed amount. on the mustang it is possible for it to turn 360* but then some of your spark plug wires will not reach.

Now, even if you restab it with the rotor pointing in a total opposite direction, you could, in theory, turn the dizzy all the way around and find your timing again. No matter where the rotor is pointing, you can ALWAYS line it back up. Now, is it one tooth off in relation to the original position? Yes, it can be.
How do I change the direction of the distributor?
An easy way to get the distributor moved the direction you want is to slowly remove the distributor, then use a long flat blade screwdriver down the distributor hole, and turn the shaft counter clockwise, LEFT, about a 16th of a turn. The distributor should go in where you want it.
