What is embolization of dural AV fistula?
In dural AV fistula embolization , the arteries in the brain are connected abnormally to veins not by normal capillaries but by arteriovenous fistulas. These fistulas can empty the arteries of blood before cerebral circulation is completed.
What is fistula embolization?
Endovascular embolization is the most common form of treatment for an AVF. We perform this procedure by inserting a catheter into an artery (usually the femoral artery in the front of the hip). Then, guided by fluoroscopic or X-ray imaging, we move it to the location of the fistula.
Is DAVF life threatening?
Some people are born with DAVFs. Some DAVFs are life threatening and may cause headaches, seizures or, if they rupture, strokes. Others are benign and go undetected until discovered during treatment for other conditions.
How is DAVF treated?
Treatment of arteriovenous fistula (DAVF)
- Minimally invasive endovascular embolization — typically sufficient to cure the majority of DAVFs.
- Microsurgical resection — reserved for DAVFs that cannot be closed with endovascular embolization.
How common is dural AV fistula?
Dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) are rare, abnormal connections between arteries and veins in the lining of the brain (the dura). Doctors classify dAVFs as either low-risk or high-risk. Low-risk dAVFs cause drainage into veins of the brain but keep drainage within the dura in the venous sinuses.
Can a DAVF burst?
A DAVF causes the high-pressure arterial blood to enter into the veins or sinuses that normally handle low-pressure blood returning to the heart. This can result in ruptures leading to bleeding and brain hemorrhage as well as other neurological issues.
Is embolization painful?
It’s normal to have some pain and cramping following the procedure. After having UFE, most people are back to a normal routine within a few weeks. As with any other procedure, there can be long-term side effects. Talk with your doctor if you’re concerned about any of these possible side effects.
Can AV fistula be cured?
Can a dural arteriovenous fistula be cured? Yes, the most common means of treating—and curing—a DAVF is through endovascular embolization. Open brain surgery rarely is required to treat a DAVF.
