Shane’s Chess Information Database (Scid) is a free and open source UNIX, Windows, Linux, and Mac application for viewing and maintaining large databases of chess games. It has features comparable to popular commercial chess software.

Do I need ChessBase?
Unless you really need offline access to chess databases and database tools, you don’t need it. Lichess studies + the analysis board + chessgames.com + chess-db.com/public/index.jsp are all free and more than good enough to do anything you would want chessbase to do.
Is ChessBase worth buying?
Chessbase 14 is quite good. Especially for post mortem analysis and maintaining a repertoire. It’s not worth the cost for club players. Just download a free and open source program such as SCID vs PC, ChessX, Tarrasch Chess GUI, etc.
Does ChessBase cost money?
As you can see the Chessbase 16 program alone costs $109 without the database and premium memberships. Note that you will need a windows 7 or higher system to download Chessbase 16.
Is SCID Database good?
It’s a great, free, open source program that has all the features one could ask for in a chess program. I use it to manage and analyze my games and to prepare openings. I often recommend SCID to students and friends as a pocketbook friendly alternative to chessbase products.
What is the difference between SCID and SCID vs PC?
PC began with bug-fixes for the computer-versus-player features of Scid (hence the name), but has evolved into a solid alternative with many new features and interfaces. The project is authored by Stevenaaus and numerous contributors. So they are not the same.
