How long are decoy lines?
Line length for puddle-duck decoys should be 4 to 6 feet. For diver decoys in deep water, use 8 to 20-foot lines. Be sure to secure some lines at the head keel holes in some decoys (using a loop knot, or heavy-duty swivel), while securing others at the tail.
How far apart are decoys on a long line?
The space between the decoys needs to be more then twice the drop. So if you have 2ft drops you need to go more then 4ft between each decoy or else they can get tangled. Most people have 2-3ft drops so that is why many people will recommend 6ft between each decoy.
What can I use as decoy weights?
Use only pure lead if you intend to wrap them, wheel weights, etc., have too much antimony and are not soft and ductile enough. Pour’em, clean the edges with a pocket knife and drill a hole in one end and you’re there.
Can you use mallard decoys for divers?
One final diver decoy note: In many areas, you’ll find puddle ducks — especially mallards — mixed with divers. Puddlers will sometimes decoy to diver setups, but they usually just fly over them and land outside the spread. So, it’s never a bad idea to put a few mallard blocks to the side of your diver decoys.

I use heavy tarred (black) nylon line (size 48 or 60), which is very strong and will not rot. I use slipknots to tie line to decoy keels and weights. (To keep the line from unraveling and to prevent the knot from slipping, tie a simple overhand knot in both ends of the line before tying the slipknots.)
