Where are NHSC-approved sites?
The following site types are eligible to become NHSC-approved:
- State Prison.
- Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Certified Rural Health Clinics (PDF – 1 MB)
- Critical Access Hospitals (CAH)
- Community Mental Health Centers (CMHC)
- State or Local Health Departments.
- Community Outpatient Facilities.
How do I get out of my NHSC contract?
Taking Permanent Leave from Your NHSC Site If you feel you can no longer continue working at your current NHSC-approved site, discuss the situation and/or concerns with your NHSC-approved site management and contact us immediately through the BHW Customer Service Portal.
Who can apply for LRP?
Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria: Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or permanent resident. degree (except for the Contraception & Infertility Research LRP). Have qualifying educational debt equal to or in excess of 20 percent of their institutional base salary.
Who qualifies NHSC?
Must be currently employed or have accepted employment at an approved, eligible site in a designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA), while providing direct patient care in an eligible discipline. Must agree to use the NHSC SLRP funds only to repay qualifying educational loans.
How much does NIH LRP pay?
How are LRP payments calculated? What will my payments be? Payment projections are based on eligible educational debt at the start date of the LRP contract. The NIH will repay 25 percent of the eligible education debt, up to a maximum of $50,000 per year.

The NHSC scholarship application process is highly competitive. Each year, there are more than 1,800 applications from hundreds of schools from across the country. Approximately 10 percent of the applicants receive the scholarship award.
