How does trample work in Magic The Gathering?

Trample is a keyword ability that changes the rules for assigning damage in the Combat Damage Step. An attacker with trample deals excess damage to the defending player or planeswalker even if it is blocked.

Can you block trample with multiple creatures?

The attacking creature’s controller need not assign lethal damage to all those blocking creatures but in that case can’t assign any damage to the player or planeswalker it’s attacking. Example: A 2/2 creature that can block an additional creature blocks two attackers: a 1/1 with no abilities a 3/3 with trample.

Does trample work if you’re defending?

Does trample go over vigor?

When a 1/1 or any creature under the protection of vigor blocks it essentially goes all kirby on it and eats all the damage, as per the wording on vigor. The trampler would be unable to deal “lethal damage” so there is no way to determine what would be “remaining” to trample over.

Can you trample over indestructible?

Indestructible creatures still get assigned damage, so the rest can still trample through.

How does Lifelink work MTG?

If a creature has lifelink, any amount of damage it deals allows its controller to gain that much life. And that’s any damage: combat and non-combat damage alike. So, if your creature with lifelink “fights” another creature outside of combat or deals damage via an activated ability, you’ll still gain the life!
