Why do people have double butted spokes?
Double butted spokes are lighter than straight gauge and offer better ride qualities due to a more flexible center section. Double butted spokes are generally very strong, however spokes with 1.5mm center sections can be challenging to build at higher tension due to twisting.
Are sapim race spokes good?

How much weight does double butted spokes save?
Replacing 32 straight gauge spokes with double-butted spokes gives almost the same benefit of 36 straight gauge spokes, but for about 70 grams less. The extent to which load is shared between neighboring spokes depends on the ratio between the rim stiffness and the spoke stiffness.
How much lighter are double butted spokes?
As already mentioned, a double-butted spoke is a few grams lighter than a straight gauge one. This result is a wheel that’s about 5% or so lighter than its counterpart built with plain gauge spokes.

It’s also said to offer better bump absorption over a non-butted spoke. The Sapim Race is a fantastic spoke that strikes a great balance of weight and strength.
What is the difference between laser and race spokes?
Race is a very popular double butted spoke. Build up tension is easy. Much less torsion and not as elastic as the Laser spokes are the key points. The Race provides a better shock absorption thanks to a thinner middle section than the one of a non-butted spokes.
