Generally, soldiers spend 3-9 months in Number 7 Company, following their Combat Infantryman’s Course at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick, and before being posted to the 1st Battalion. The Company maintains its military skills, with regular training exercises outside London, and overseas adventure training.

During the Crimean War, the Coldstream Regiment fought in the battles of Alma, Inkerman and Sevastopol. On its return, four men of the regiment were awarded the newly instituted Victoria Cross. The regiment received its current name, The Coldstream Guards, in 1855.
