Is KDE a good desktop?
KDE is one of the most popular desktop environments out there. You may also refer it as the “Plasma” desktop. Even though it’s not my primary choice, it is highly customizable and extremely lightweight. Yes, it looks like KDE has managed to beat XFCE as one of the lightest desktop environments.
Is KDE any good?
Performance. In terms of system resource usage, KDE Plasma is excellent. I have a newly-updated Kubuntu 20.04 virtual machine with 4 cores of my i7-8655u and 8 GB RAM. With idle RAM usage at around 490 MB and idle CPU usage averaging 0.4%, you could run Plasma in just about any system you have available.
Is KDE or GNOME better?
GNOME is generally regarded as streamlined and less resource-intensive than KDE. Interestingly, while GNOME’s minimum system requirements are less demanding as far as CPU speed is concerned (700 Mhz, vs KDE’s 1 Ghz requirement), KDE actually requires less minimum RAM (615 MB vs GNOME’s 768 MB).
Is KDE or GNOME more stable?
KDE Plasma has very stable applications, but little choice: since most applications do everything and are extremely configurable, there is little incentive to work on a new project instead of contributing to an existing one. GNOME, on the other hand, has a nice choice of different applications, but they have issues.

If you expect to see a feature-rich desktop, CentOS 7 Live KDE will not meet your expectations. The default desktop is empty. It has a wallpaper in light-blue tones with CentOS 7 written in the bottom-right corner, and that is it. Installing the KDE Desktop is now as simple as installing the “KDE Plasma Workspaces” package group, which is already configured to install hundreds more packages that are required for a GUI installation. Note that this may take a while, on my minimal installation I needed to download almost 1000 packages which took up almost 2GB of disk space.
