The volcano contains two summit peaks of the same height. A large explosive eruption took pleace about 1000-1500 years ago and produced pyroclastic flows. Ojos del Salado is still active and has fumarolic activity at present, but there are no confirmed historical eruptions of Ojos del Salado.

Ojos del Salado is considered an easy walk-up, but the last part can be a bit tricky. Very loose, rotten rock and grade UIAA II on 6900m can cause problems if tired from the long walk to the summit block. In addition to this, you usually have to deal with the strong winds which plagues the area.
