Can you have fibroids outside the uterus?
Uterine fibroids are benign, or noncancerous, fibrous growths that form in the uterus. They’re very common. They can grow on the outside of the uterus (called subserosal fibroids), inside the muscle of the uterus (called intramural fibroids), or into the uterine cavity (called submucosal fibroids).
Can fibroids outside the uterus cause pain?
Subserosal fibroids grow on the outside of the uterus. As they grow larger, they can cause pain due to their size or pressure put on nearby organs.
How do they treat fibroids outside the uterus?
In a myomectomy, your surgeon removes the fibroids, leaving the uterus in place. If the fibroids are few in number, you and your doctor may opt for a laparoscopic or robotic procedure, which uses slender instruments inserted through small incisions in your abdomen to remove the fibroids from your uterus.

Common symptoms to look out for with a subserosal fibroid include:
- Abdominal pain or cramping.
- Bloating or constipation.
- Feeling of fullness or heaviness.

Can fibroids cause pain in your side?
If the flow of urine is backed up because of a fibroid pressing on a ureter, the back-pressure can cause the kidney to swell, a condition called hydronephrosis. Symptoms may include painful urination, a greater urge to go or going more often, and pain on one side.
