A Better Chance began as a pioneering experiment in educational opportunity. The Charles E. Merrill Foundation gave a grant that allowed twenty-three independent schools to respond to President John F. Kennedy’s call for equal access to the nation’s top schools for minority students.
What is an ABC scholar?
The ABC Scholars Project is a FREE enrichment program to support gifted students and their families through middle school. Enrollment in the ABC Scholars Project means students will participate in the program during the Summer and on Saturdays during the school year.
What makes an eligible student under FERPA?
FERPA defines an eligible student as a student who has reached 18 years of age or is attending a postsecondary institution at any age. This means that, at the secondary level, once a student turns 18, all the rights that once belonged to his or her parents transfer to the student.

Since our application cycle begins much earlier than the average school application, we allow students to get a head start on the admissions process to our Member Schools. When you begin your A Better Chance application in February, you start preparing for schools’ application processes almost six months earlier.
