What is CD38 in CLL?
CD38 is a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on the surface of leukemic cells in a significant percentage of patients with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL). A recent study suggested that CD38 expression has prognostic value in CLL.
What does CD38 positive mean?
Patients in the CD38-positive cohort were characterised by an unfavourable clinical course with a more advanced disease stage, poor responsiveness to chemotherapy, short time to initiation of first treatment and shorter survival.
What is CD38 positive plasma cells?
CD38 is a glycoprotein with ectoenzymatic functions, which is expressed on plasma cells and other lymphoid and myeloid cell populations. Since its expression is very high and uniform on myeloma cells, CD38 is a good target for novel therapeutic strategies. Among them, immunotherapy represents a promising approach.
How do you stop CD38?
Flavonoids. Several naturally occurring compounds are reported to inhibit the catalytic activity of CD38 including flavonoid compounds apigenin, quercetin, and leteolinidin (8, 102, 107) (Table 1).
What does CD38 stand for?
CD38 (cluster of differentiation 38), also known as cyclic ADP ribose hydrolase is a glycoprotein found on the surface of many immune cells (white blood cells), including CD4+, CD8+, B lymphocytes and natural killer cells. CD38 also functions in cell adhesion, signal transduction and calcium signaling.
What is anti CD38?
A substance that binds to a protein called CD38, which is found on some types of blood cells and in high levels on some cancer cells, including myeloma cells. Anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody may block the CD38 protein and help the immune system kill cancer cells.
Is CD38 expressed on T cells?
Human CD38 is highly expressed on early T cell precursors and on CD4+veCD8+ve double-positive thymocytes [8]. In contrast, mature T cells have low levels of CD38, but upon mitogenic activation, they up-regulate their expression [2, 9, 10].
Is fasting good for CLL?
Preliminary in vitro (test-tube) studies by our research team have already demonstrated 100% kill rate of CLL cells using a combination of specific FDA-approved agents and FMD. Additionally, fasting appears to protect normal cells from the side-effects (toxicity) of these agents.
What increases CD38?
Since CD38 is highly expressed in inflammatory cells, it is possible that the low grade inflammation occurring during aging may lead to an increase in the expression of CD38 in inflammatory cells, and accumulation of CD38-positive inflammatory cells in the tissue.
Where is CD38 expressed?
CD38 is expressed in many immune cell types, including bone marrow progenitors, natural killer cells, monocytes, and activated T- and B- lymphocytes [6].
What is CD38 marker?
Clinical significanceEdit. The CD38 protein is a marker of cell activation. It has been connected to HIV infection, leukemias, myelomas, solid tumors, type II diabetes mellitus and bone metabolism, as well as some genetically determined conditions.
What is the prognosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)?
The prognosis of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) is rather mixed. Most patients will live for 5 to 10 years. However, some die within 2-3 years of diagnosis. In most patients, the disease begins in a benign way followed by a progressive and resistant terminal phase that lasts for 1-2 years.
Is CLL fatal?
Although people with CLL can go for years without treatment, it is a serious and potentially fatal disease.
