Why was RSPO established?
In response to the urgent and pressing global call for sustainably-produced palm oil, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was formed in 2004 with the objective of promoting the growth and use of sustainable oil palm products through credible global standards and engagement of stakeholders.
Why do we need RSPO?
RSPO certification is an assurance to the customer that the standard of palm oil production is sustainable. All organisations in the supply chain that use RSPO certified sustainable oil products are audited to prevent overselling and mixing palm oil with conventional (or non-sustainable) oil palm products.
Who started the RSPO?
Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was established in 2004 by green organisations (e.g. WWF) in response to the negative consequences of the overwhelming global demand for palm oil. Palm oil is the primary cause of deforestation of tropical rainforest in Indonesia and Malaysia.
