What is Trichosporon spp?
Trichosporon spp. are basidiomycetous yeast-like fungi found widely in nature. Clinical isolates are generally related to superficial infections. However, this fungus has been recognized as an opportunistic agent of invasive infections, mostly in cancer patients and those exposed to invasive medical procedures.
Is trichosporon a yeast or mold?
All species of Trichosporon are yeasts with no known teleomorphs (sexual states). Most are typically isolated from soil, but several species occur as a natural part of the skin microbiota of humans and other animals.
What causes trichosporon?
Hematologic malignancies, neutropenia, HIV/AIDS, end-stage renal disease, corticosteroid use, solid tumors, intravascular devices, prosthetic heart valves, and hemochromatosis are all considered risk factors for invasive Trichosporon infection.
How is Trichosporon treated?
Combination therapy should be the cornerstone of treatment for trichosporonosis. The combination of high-dose amphotericin B (deoxycholate or liposomal) with either or both 5-flucytosine or voriconazole is commonly prescribed, although failure rates remain high.
How is trichosporon treated?
What kills tinea capitis?
Oral antifungals are needed to effectively treat tinea capitis. Terbinafine, itraconazole, and fluconazole are the preferred agents for tinea capitis. Griseofulvin is also effective and may be used in resource-poor settings where other antifungals are not available.
What is proven invasive trichosporonosis?
The infection is considered as proven invasive trichosporonosis if the blood culture or cerebrospinal fluid culture of a patient yields Trichosporon spp., patients shows the signs and symptoms of infection, or the biopsy specimen culture yields Trichosporon spp. or its compatible fungal species.
What is the scientific name of Trichosporon?
The term Trichosporon has been derived from the combination of two Greek words- Trichos (hair) and sporon (spores). This nomenclature is directly connected to its discovery as a causative agent of fungal infection White Piedra in humans (1). Genus Trichosporon belongs to phylum Basidiomycota.
Is Trichosporon cutaneum the same as Trichosporon beigelii?
Trichosporon beigelii is the most significant pathogen in the genus Trichosporon. The name Trichosporon cutaneum has been often synonymously used with Trichosporon beigelii. There have recently appeared new proposals about the classification and nomenclature of Trichosporon spp. by Gueho et al. and later by Sugita et al[928, 2187, 2190].
What are the signs and symptoms of Trichosporon infections?
Cutaneous lesions as a manifestation of disseminated infection are also likely. Trichosporon is one of the fungi isolated from patients with fungemia. It may infect prosthetic valves, central nervous system (including chronic meningitis), cornea and the peritoneum (in patients receiving peritoneal dialysis).
