Why did Cork Gaol close?
During the Civil War, the City Gaol had political prisoners, before it finally closed in 1923. The remaining prisoners from the Goal were either released or sent to other prisons. Cork City Gaol was left unused for a few years since.

Does anyone live on Spike Island?
Spike Island has a total area of 104 acres which is topped by the 24 acre Fort Mitchel. Further out in the island are many houses and even a village with many homes and a church. The residents lived on the the island until 1985 when the riot of that year forced their removal.

Is the gaol worth the walk from city centre?
The Gaol is a fair walk from the city centre, however, if you can make it on foot (its mostly uphill) i’d say its worth it as its a nice walk. The Gaol itself is in quite a pleasant setting, although inside its a completely different story.
