During the Civil War, the City Gaol had political prisoners, before it finally closed in 1923. The remaining prisoners from the Goal were either released or sent to other prisons. Cork City Gaol was left unused for a few years since.

The Gaol is a fair walk from the city centre, however, if you can make it on foot (its mostly uphill) i’d say its worth it as its a nice walk. The Gaol itself is in quite a pleasant setting, although inside its a completely different story.
