Are tire socks effective?
The AutoSock and ISSE “tire socks” significantly improved snow traction, shortening the distance to 58 feet, while the Michelin Easy Grip did even better at 49 feet. In our experience, the ”tire sock” products were a little easier to install than the Michelin Easy Grip, but all three are hard to pull over a tire.
Do tire cables count as chains?
Although they look similar once they’re on the tire and perform the same task, tire cables differ in composition. They’re made of steel cable encased in an alloy and look like cables rather than chains. Like snow chains, they’re available in different sizes to fit different tires.
Are snow cables legal?
During the winter months, motorists may encounter traction chain controls in the mountain areas within California. Requirement 1 (R-1): Chains are required on all vehicles except passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks under 6,000 pounds gross weight and equipped with snow tires on at least two drive wheels.
How fast can I drive with snow cables?
Recommended maximum speeds in the owners’ manual of the chains – generally 30 to 50 km/h (20 to 30 mph) – maximum. Driving on dry roads with chains for extended periods of time. Driving on dry roads with chains can cause a vehicle to slide when braking. Driving on dry roads with chains will rapidly wear the chains.
