How did Zealandia sink?
Zealandia is thought to have been submerged for at least 23 million years. Some 100 million years ago, when Zealandia was still above water, it began pulling away from the supercontinent of Gondwana. That process stretched Zealandia’s crust, causing most of it to sink.

Can a continent sink?
Most continents are too buoyant to sink into the dense mantle, and the plates therefore remain locked into each other at the surface. However, the India–Eurasia collision is an exception to this rule. About 50 million years (Myr) ago, when the collision may have started, plate velocities decreased by a factor of three.
Will New Zealand be underwater?
With the same anchor as Australia, New Zealand would be more than 1km underwater. The level of the land is determined by both the thickness of the crust and the tectonic plate, Lamb explained. But over geological time, erosion wore away the crust, tending to keep the land near sea level, whatever the plate’s thickness.
