How do I set up my RBS card-reader?
How to enable your card reader
- Login to Digital Banking.
- Select ‘Security’ from the menu.
- In the ‘Using a card reader’ section, select ‘Enable a card reader’
- You will be shown a screen with a 2-step process to enable your card reader.
Do you need a card-reader for online banking?

Can I transfer money without a card-reader RBS?
You don’t need a card-reader if you use our mobile banking app. You can make payments of up to £250 by using the account number and sort code of the person or company you want to pay.
Can you use any RBS card-reader?
A: Yes, you can use anybody’s Bankline Smartcard reader. However, you’ll always need to make sure you’re using your own Smartcard when you’re authorising something on your account.

What is the RBS card reader?
A card reader gives you an extra level of security when using Digital Banking, and you may need to use it to confirm your identity when logging in if you don’t have a mobile number, or you’ve recently updated it with us. update personal details, like your mobile number, PIN, email address or password.
Can you use any card reader for Online Banking?
Yes, you should be able to use someone else’s card reader, even if it’s from another bank, but you can only use your own bank card and PIN. For your own security, you should only use a card reader from a trusted source and make sure that the label on the back is intact.
How does a card reader know my PIN?
Since your reader is obviously not connected to anything but your card, the PIN you enter is in fact verified by the software running on your card itself, and not by the reader. The reader supplies the card with your entered PIN.
How do I transfer money online with RBS?
What you’ll need
- Log into the mobile app.
- Click on ‘transfer’ below the account you would like to transfer from.
- Choose the account you would like to make a transfer to.
- Enter amount you wish to transfer and click ‘Make transfer’.
- Confirm payment on confirmation screen and select ‘Make transfer’
Are RBS card readers Universal?
Yes, if you have a card reader from us, you can use that, or most card readers from other banks. To order a new card reader: Access your Digital Banking service at www.digitalbanking.rbs.co.uk.
Can I add a payee without card reader?
If you want to set up or amend a payee on your Online Banking service you will need your mobile app if you are registered for Biometrics or a a card-reader. However you don’t need your card-reader to arrange a payment to someone that you have paid previously using Online Banking.
