How to remove your road bike’s crankset
- Loosen the left-hand crank bolts. First, use a 4mm Allen key to loosen up the hex bolts that hold the left-hand crank arm onto the crank spindle.
- Remove the adjustment cap.
- Remove the crankset.
- Clean up the bottom bracket.
- Put it all back together.
- Retighten the bolts.

Loosen the 2 hex pinch bolts. Stick a long nose pliers in the center plastic cap , spread open the pliers so it catches inside the center cap and turn clockwise. Once its twisted off, just pull the non drive side crank arm and take a rubber pallet and tap the crank out.

The easiest way to remove a chainring is usually to take the right-hand crank arm off the bike first. Chain rings are mounted using chain-ring bolts that clamp the ring to the ‘spider’ arms on the crank. Shimano Hollowtech cranks have a hollow axle that is connected to the right-hand crank. They are simple to fit.
How do you tighten the bottom bracket on a Shimano crankset?
Replace the adjustment cap, screwing it in gently using the Bottom Bracket Tool. Don’t overtighten it or you will damage the bottom bracket bearings. Use your torque Allen key to tighten the crank arm bolts; the recommend torque is usually shown on the crank arm – 15-20Nm for our Shimano crankset.
