How do you tell if my dinghy is PVC or Hypalon?
Hypalon is glued, with lots of material overlap, PVC has narrow overlaps and welded impressions. PVC also shows fabric print-thru because the material is thinner.
How long does a Hypalon dinghy last?
Hypalon (CSM) boats usually last 7-15 years, but can last as many as 20 years.
Is my rib Hypalon or PVC?
There are several tests to check if you are unsure which fabric your inflatable RIB or dinghy is made from. A. Back of Fabric; If you can see the inside of the tube when deflated, through the valve, Hypalon is a dark grey or black on the inside. PVC is the same colour on both sides.
Is Hypalon still made?
Hypalon was discontinued by its manufacturer (DuPont) and is now sold under its slightly different formula and new name “CSM” or Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene Rubber.
Can you weld Hypalon?
Some are simply Thermo Plastic (PVC and Urethane), and some are Thermo Set Plastics (Hypalon, and Neopreme). It is the fabric inside that adds the strength to the coated fabric, and even this is plastic. Thermo plastic coated fabrics are weldable because the coatings can be melted and fused together.
How do you get rid of mold in Hypalon?
You can try to remove the stains with chlorine bleach, but this will impact the integrity of the fabric and limit the life of the tube. The tube will become porous and start to loose air. You can replace the tube.

Rubber rafts like NRS, Hyside, Avon, and many others are fairly inexpensive to build, and are relatively solid in construction and durability. They flex with waves (sometimes desired sometimes not) and they are easily rolled for storage.
