Is pilonidal cyst surgery a major surgery?
Pilonidal cystectomy is a minor surgical procedure that is typically scheduled and performed by a colorectal surgeon on an outpatient basis. General or regional anesthesia may be used to manage pain during the removal of an infected pilonidal cyst or abscess.
Can I poop after pilonidal cyst surgery?
Because pilonidal surgery is not as painful as many procedures, this is not usually a problem. However, constipation is still possible. It is important that you eat regularly and for a while consume enough fiber. If after a few days you haven’t had a bowel movement you can take 1-2 ounces of milk of magnesia.
Is it good to walk after pilonidal cyst surgery?
You will need to refrain from exercising and heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks after surgery. Walking after surgery is encouraged, especially after your first post-op appointment. You should not shower until you are seen in the office. You do not need to change any of the dressing, leave that in place until we remove it.

Avoid sitting for a long time or sitting on hard surfaces until your incision has healed. Most people are able to return to work within 2 to 4 weeks after surgery.

Stitches may be removed in 7 to 10 days time. Wounds which are not stitched also heal within 2 or 3 weeks (sometimes longer if there is a large cavity).
How do you wipe after pilonidal surgery?
Use wet wipes or Balneol (better) to clean after a bowel movement for several weeks after surgery. Showering (not bathing) after a bowel movement is a good idea for the first several days after surgery.
Can I run with pilonidal cyst?
Do not exercise, run or workout for at least 3-4 weeks. If your wound is closed (sutured), then be very careful while bending, sitting or going to the bathroom. Remove dressing after 24 hrs.
How long do you have to pack a pilonidal cyst after surgery?
If the wound is left open, it can take longer to heal. Until it is healed, you will need to pack the wound. This process can take eight weeks or even several months.
Can you get a pilonidal cyst twice?
Unfortunately, pilonidal cysts do come back after surgery. Studies show recurrence rates are as high as 30 percent. The cysts may return because the area gets infected again or hair grows near the incision scar. People who have recurrent pilonidal cysts often develop chronic wounds and draining sinuses.
