What is a phonic book?
Phonics-Based Fantasy/Adventure Books for Older Readers Each Phonic Book contains richly-illustrated pages with quick-moving stories to keep readers engaged and minimize frustration and fatigue. The Phonics Books Series are: Designed for guided or independent reading.
What is a Decodable reader?
The “decodable readers” they are funding are books that are contrived to help children practise a particular letter-sound pattern taught as part of a synthetic phonics program. While they may teach the phonics skills “N” and “P”, they don’t teach children the other important decoding skills of grammar and vocabulary.
What does Speld test for?

- Circle or highlight words with a target phonics pattern (this is important because it helps kids make the connection between a phonics concept and actual reading)
- Discuss the meaning of the text (always!)
- Read the text multiple times, for fluency practice (at school and/or at home)
How do you teach Decodable books?
Select the decodable reader that contains the letter sound knowledge your students know and need to practise. For example, a student needs to practice the long vowel sounds so a reader containing /ai/ words may be selected. Remember that this letter sound knowledge must be explicitly taught prior to reading.

How do the Speld SA phonic books work?
The SPELD SA Phonic Books use the sequence of sounds used in the Jolly Phonics synthetic phonics program, which teaches 42 main sounds in English and how those sounds are represented as single letters and a combination of letters. Students say and blend these letter-sounds together to hear words. This is called decoding.

The free SPELD SA Phonemic Awareness Tasks have been created for the purpose of helping students develop phonological awareness skills.
