What is a PleurX?

A PleurX drainage catheter is a thin, flexible tube that’s placed in your chest to drain fluid from your pleural space. This can make it easier for you to breathe.

How long can a PleurX catheter stay in?

Notify your doctor if you continue to feel short of breath after draining 1000mL of fluid. How long will the catheter be in my chest or abdomen? Chest: The catheter will be in your chest until fluid stops draining. The amount of time will vary from patient to patient, anywhere from a few weeks to several months.

The PleurX catheter is inserted in the chest for draining pleural effusions. The PleurX catheter is inserted in the abdomen for draining malignant ascites. The end of the catheter stays on the outside of the body, covered by a thin protective dressing while not in use.

Is a lung catheter painful?

Usually, you will be able to breathe more comfortably with the catheter in place and the fluid drained away. Some people experience pain or soreness around the area where the catheter is tunneled under skin and enters the chest which may cause you to take shallow breaths.

What color should fluid drained from lungs be?

A thoracentesis is a procedure used to drain excess fluid from the space outside of the lungs but inside the chest cavity. Normally, this area contains about 20 milliliters of clear or yellow fluid. If there’s excess fluid in this area, it can cause symptoms such as shortness of breath and coughing.

Are you awake during a thoracentesis?

Thoracentesis can be done in a doctor’s office or in a hospital. It’s typically performed while you’re awake, but you may be sedated. You’ll need someone else to help you get home after the procedure if you’re sedated.

Chest: Potential complications include, but may not be limited to, pneumothorax, re-expansion pulmonary edema, hypotension, circulatory collapse and infection of the pleural space. Do not drain more than 1,000 mL of fluid from your chest at any one time.
