What is cell line authentication?
We offer a human cell line authentication (CLA) service that uses Promega’s GenePrint® 10 system to confirm the identity of human cell lines through short tandem repeat (STR) analysis and to detect the presence of cell line contaminants.
What is short tandem repeat profiling?
STR profiling is an analytical DNA technique which PCR-amplifies variable microsatellite regions from a genomic DNA template, separates the PCR amplicons on a genetic analyzer, and uses software to analyze the resulting data and compare the data from one specimen to databases housing previously generated STR sets.
How do you thaw cells in ATCC?
Thaw the vial by gentle agitation in a water bath at 37°C or the normal growth temperature for that cell line. Thawing should be rapid, approximately 2 minutes or until ice crystals have melted. Remove the vial from the water bath and decontaminate it by dipping in or spraying with 70% ethanol.
How are cell lines validated?
The main test for authenticating cell lines is short tandem repeat (STR) profiling, the analysis of microsatellite regions of DNA that have variable numbers of repeats and are located throughout the genome.

Cell and microbial authentication is of the utmost importance; skipping the authentication step can lead to lost time and money and retractions of publication as cross-contamination or misidentification has invalidated the data that that research is built upon.
What is the process of thawing?
Thawing is the process of taking a frozen product from frozen to a temperature (usually above 0°C) where there is no residual ice, i.e. “defrosting”. Thawing is often considered as simply the reversal of the freezing process.
What are the regulatory requirements for validating a cell line for vaccine production?
In cell line validation, identity must be confirmed as well as purity and sterility. Cross-contamination can compromise product yield, quality, and safety.
