The SDO ( Staff Duty Officer) acts for the Battalion/Group Commander during the absence of the Command Group (Commander, Executive Officer, and Command Sergeant Major). He/she welcomes incoming new Soldiers, signs in or out people taking leave, etc.

HOW LONG IS staff duty in the Army?
Staff Duty and CQ are similar, in that you are essentially assigned a twenty-four hour shift, during which you are entrusted with the welfare and protection of x number of soldiers and x amount of property i.e. a barracks building, or other Government building, and everything within and or assigned to that building.
Can you sleep on staff duty?
24 hour duty requires only one Soldier be present. Usually lunch for an hour, dinner for an hour, and you can take smoke breaks pretty much whenever. You can pretty much sleep whenever the CSM and Battalion or brigade commander leave the building.
Why is staff duty 24 hours?
A situation can occur at any time, and someone needs to be there. Instead of burning through personnel at an unreasonably fast rate, a 24 hour shift ensures the company who has Staff Duty Detail will not be rotating personnel too quickly. It is generally accompanied by 24 – 48 hours off.
