What is ventricular non-compaction?

What is ventricular non-compaction?

Left ventricular noncompaction is a heart (cardiac) muscle disorder that occurs when the lower left chamber of the heart (left ventricle), which helps the heart pump blood, does not develop correctly. Instead of the muscle being smooth and firm, the cardiac muscle in the left ventricle is thick and appears spongy.

Can LVNC worsen?

The progression of LVNC is also highly variable: in rare cases, regression of noncompaction has been observed (6,7), whereas other cases are associated with serious complications including heart failure, life-threatening ventricular arrhythmia and cardioembolism.

What is isolated ventricular non-compaction?

Isolated ventricular non-compaction is a morphological abnormality of excessive (atleast four) trabeculation and deep inter-trabecular spaces communicating with the ventricular cavity, with typical bilaminar structure of compacted and noncompacted segment of ventricle.

Can the right ventricle be affected by noncompaction?

Although the usual site of involvement is the left ventricle, the right ventricle (RV) can rarely be affected. Isolated right ventricle involvement is very rare and to the best of our knowledge only few cases of isolated RV noncompaction are reported.

What causes noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium?

Noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium is a cardiomyopathy thought to be caused by arrest of normal embryogenesis of the endocardium and myocardium. This abnormality is often associated with other congenital cardiac defects but it is also seen in the absence of other cardiac anomalies.

What does isolated right ventricle noncompaction on MRI indicate?

Cardiac MRI further confirmed the diagnosis of isolated right ventricle noncompaction. Thus clinician should keenly look for this rare cardiomyopathy as an important differential diagnosis of patient presenting with right sided heart failure. 1. Case report
