What is a Restricted A2 Licence? A Restricted Licence can be gained by taking a motorcycle test on a motorcycle or scooter of at least 400cc and between 20 and 35kw (33 to 47bhp). It is also known as an A2 Licence. To qualify for this test you must have first done a CBT and a Motorcycle Theory Test.
What can I ride on A2?
An A2 licence allows riders aged 19 and over to:
- Ride a bike that produces no more than 35 kW or 47bhp (these are normally advertised as A2 bikes in dealer showrooms)
- Ride without L-plates.

Can I ride an A2 bike on L plates?
Passed. After passing your A2 you will be able to ride any A2 legal bike (more on this below). You can also ride without L plates, ride on the motorway and take pillion passengers. After having held your A2 licence for 2 years you will be eligible to take your full unrestricted licence.
Can you ride a 600cc bike on a A2 Licence?
On passing – you can ride any motorcycle up to 46Bhp There is no automatic upgrades of licence – if you wish to move up to a full (A) licence you will need to retake the module 1 and 2 tests on an unrestricted 600cc bike when you have reached 24 years of age or held the A2 licence for 2 years.
