What happened Midway Gardens?
In 1929, having passed through multiple hands and greatly affected by World War I and prohibition, Midway Gardens closed permanently and was demolished. A testament to the solidity of Wright’s construction, the process of tearing it down proved so difficult that it sent the demolition company into bankruptcy.
Why was Midway Gardens torn down?
When Prohibition came around, Midway Gardens went dry but remained open until a decline in attendance caused it to shutter in 1929, when the building was demolished. Rose Pauson commissioned Wright to design a winter home that she could share with her sister, and he produced a monumental stone-and-wood structure.
