When were preprefix number plates introduced?
Prefix number plates were introduced in 1983. This was because by 1982 the year suffixes had reached the end of the alphabet (Y Suffix) so from August 1983 onwards the format was reversed with a single age related year letter at the front. The year-letter suffix now became a prefix giving a format as follows:
