We operate two staffed bases at Langwathby, near Penrith, and Progress House in Eaglescliffe. We also have a forward operating base at Newcastle International Airport to give us the best possible coverage in an area of around 8,000 square miles.

The helicopters are hangared at RAF Northolt, but operate during the day from their base at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, East London, a helicopter can reach any patient inside the M25 London orbital motorway, which acts as the service’s catchment area, within 15 minutes.

What items do you accept? It’s not just clothing that we accept! We also welcome curtains, towels, handbags, belts, shoes in pairs and bedding (apart from quilts and pillows). Mobile phones, books and inkjet cartridges are also welcome donations, however, we ask that you please bag these separately from any clothing.

Much of the time, doctors are giving up their free time to join flights – and are not paid. But the result is that the service is fragmented and variable. Some services do not have doctors onboard but rely on critical care paramedics – committed and talented professionals but with fewer skills than emergency doctors.

Where is Yorkshire Air Ambulance’s new H145 helicopter based?
It is based at Yorkshire Air Ambulance’s northern air base at RAF Topcliffe, near Thirsk, and completes the replacement of the rapid response emergency service’s two, ageing MD902 Explorer aircraft. Last September the first H145 went into service, flying from the charity’s air support unit at Nostell, near Wakefield.
Where is the Yorkshire Air Ambulance airbase?
After outgrowing our space at Leeds Bradford Airport in December 2011, we acquired our airbase on the grounds of Nostell Priory near Wakefield. Lord St Oswald, the owner of the estate, has been a long-time friend of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and had heard that we were looking for a new space.
