How successful is the Eden Project?
The project which has been a phenomenal success and become one of the country’s best loved attractions in just five years won “best of the best” prize in the British Construction Industry’s (BCI) 20th anniversary awards while the Channel Tunnel was named the top civil engineering project.
How many domes are in the Eden Project?
The second phase of The Eden Project’s development refers to the ‘biomes’, a sequence of eight inter-linked geodesic transparent domes covering 2.2 ha and encapsulating vast humid tropic and warm temperate regions. Designing the biomes was an exercise in efficiency, both of space and material.
What is the core at the Eden Project?
The Core, on three floors, is built into the landscape so that each floor is accessible from ground level. The Core’s timber structure comprises Forestry Stewardship Council-endorsed glulam (glued laminated) beams.
What is Eden Project made of?
The biomes were designed as a warm environment for plants. They’re made of transparent hexagonal panels on a steel structure. The panels trap air between two layers of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), a kind of plastic. ETFE is designed for strength over a wide range of temperatures.
What biomes does the Eden Project have?
Designed by Grimshaw Architects, our two Biome buildings – the Rainforest Biome and the Mediterranean Biome – each consist of several domes joined together, and are joined in the middle by the Link building.
What are the disadvantages of the Eden Project?

- Traffic has greatly increased in the surrounding area, this means delivery time for certain business are delayed.
- The build up of traffic has caused a great increase in pollution (IRONIC!)
- Due to traffic build up the value of surrounding houses has decreased.
Was the Eden Project funded by the EU?
Since the Eden Project opened in 2001 it has generated more than £2 billion for the regional economy. Other major sources of funding included the EU and Southwest Regional Development Agency (some £50 million between them, including £26 million towards capital funding from the EU) and £20 million of commercial loans.
Are Biomes open at Eden Project?
Biomes opening times. In the morning, the Biomes open half an hour after the ticket desks open. In the afternoon, last entry to the Biomes is half an hour before Eden closes.
