The second phase of The Eden Project’s development refers to the ‘biomes’, a sequence of eight inter-linked geodesic transparent domes covering 2.2 ha and encapsulating vast humid tropic and warm temperate regions. Designing the biomes was an exercise in efficiency, both of space and material.

The Core, on three floors, is built into the landscape so that each floor is accessible from ground level. The Core’s timber structure comprises Forestry Stewardship Council-endorsed glulam (glued laminated) beams.

The biomes were designed as a warm environment for plants. They’re made of transparent hexagonal panels on a steel structure. The panels trap air between two layers of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), a kind of plastic. ETFE is designed for strength over a wide range of temperatures.
