There were a total of four batches of V sets produced for the then State Rail Authority. The sets will be gradually phased out starting in 2021 for scrapping, with their successors, the D sets, to commence service on the Central Coast and Newcastle Line, with the Blue Mountains Line to follow later.

The T sets, also referred to as the Tangara trains, are a class of electric multiple units that currently operate on the Sydney Trains network. Built by Goninan, the sets entered service between 1988 and 1995, initially under the State Rail Authority and later CityRail.
