What is daedalic?
The first stage of Greek sculpture (c. 650-600) is usually called Daedalic (after Daedalus, a legendary founder of the art). Its style is based on a simple formula which remained dominant, though with evolutionary modifications, for about two generations, before evolving into the Archaic style.
What characteristics define the daedalic style?
Features that distinguish Daedalic works are the characteristic “Archaic smile,” triangular or wig-like hair, and large, almond-shaped eyes. As these are earlier and less-naturalistic Archaic sculptural forms, the bodily features are rather stiff and linear.

Kouroi are the youthful male equivalent of kore statues. Korai show the restrained “archaic smile”, which did not demonstrate emotion. It was the symbol of the ideal, transcending above the hardships of the world. Unlike the nude kouroi, korai are depicted in thick and sometimes elaborate drapery.

The term “Phidian style” used to describe the Parthenon sculptures is no more than a generic label; undoubtedly, a large number of masters were involved, since the frieze and the two pediments were executed in less than ten years (c. 440-432 B.C.).
