Can broken leg cause swelling?
A broken leg (leg fracture) will be severely painful and may be swollen or bruised. You usually will not be able to walk on it. If it’s a severe fracture, the leg may be an odd shape and the bone may even be poking out of the skin.
How is the leg affected by a cast?
When the cast is removed, it is not unusual to experience some pain, swelling and stiffness of the joint for a few days and notice atrophy of the leg muscles (calf and quadriceps) for a few weeks. There will also be dry scaly skin around the leg.

Yes. This is probably the most important thing to remember when sleeping with a cast, no matter what bone you’ve broken. Keeping the injured bone elevated above the heart prevents blood from pooling around the break which can cause painful swelling.

- Sit with your foot elevated higher than your knee at least 4 times a day.
- Apply an ice pack 20 minutes of every hour, you are awake, for the first 2 days.
- After 2 days, use the ice pack for 10 to 20 minutes, 3 times a day as needed.
