What is Kernza wheat?
Kernza® grain is harvested from intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium). Kernza® grain is a perennial substitute for annual wheat in foods like baked goods and beer or can be used as a whole grain like barley or rice.
Is there a perennial wheat?
Perennial wheat is a crop now under development by plant breeders. Winter wheat that is commonly grown is an annual crop. The new crop, ‘perennial wheat,’ has about 75% genetic material from annual wheat, and about 25% from Intermediate Wheat Grass (Thinopyrum intermedium) and other perennial grasses.
Can you eat Kernza?

Why is Kernza trademarked?
Kernza® is trademarked by The Land Institute, a research-based nonprofit organization headquartered in Salina, Kansas in order to protect growers and consumers in the marketplace. Annual license agreements with The Land Institute allow growers to sell their grain with the trademarked Kernza® name.

Is Kernza a GMO?
Kernza has a deep root system compared to annual wheat which means it can prevent soil erosion. Believe it or not, Kernza hasn’t been genetically modified. Genetic modification may be a quick solution to Kernza’s seeding issue, but then certified organic farmers would be unable to purchase seeds.
How do you harvest Kernza?
And of concern to organic producers is the fact that the longer a grain crop needs to stand in the field the greater the weed pressure becomes. Weeds don’t stop growing just because the grain is maturing. The first and most common way to harvest organic Kernza® is to windrow the grain to dry out the green stems.
