Can you eat or drink before a prostate MRI?
Please DO NOT eat solid foods 4 before your arrival time. You may drink clear liquids up to 2 hours before your scheduled appointment time. To get the best images, we need your small bowel to be as still as possible. Eating and drinking cause it to move more and can cause the images to be blurry.
Does prostate MRI require fasting?
You will be asked to fast for 4 hours prior to your exam. You may take your usual medications with small amounts of water. Otherwise, no additional preparation is needed. Prostate exams are done in the Main Hospital only.
What should I eat the day before my prostate MRI?
Please eat a light diet the evening before your prostate MRI exam. This means avoid bulky foods or processed (fast food) that cause digestive disturbances. Poultry and/or fish is ok.
What do I wear for a prostate MRI?
Take your regular medications as usual, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Leave jewelry at home and wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may need to wear a gown. If you have claustrophobia or anxiety, ask your doctor for a mild sedative prior to the exam.

Can I drink coffee before MRI with contrast?
Continue to take any medication prescribed by your doctor unless otherwise directed. MRI or MRA Kidneys, MRCP, Liver or Pelvis: Do not eat anything four hours before the exam. You may have clear liquids only (jello, tea, fruit drinks without pulp, black coffee, water, etc.) for 6 hours before the exam.
Can I drink water before an MRI?
You should not eat or drink anything 4 hours prior to your exam time. You may take your medications with a small sip of water if needed. The day before your exam drink plenty of water so you are well hydrated. Being hydrated will ease the discomfort for those receiving contrast.
Is a prostate MRI uncomfortable?
The scan takes about 30-45 minutes to complete. Because an MRI uses magnetic waves to image the inside of your body, a prostate MRI is totally painless and non-invasive.
