I think the deer tip the balance of nature in favor of the buckthorn by browsing early spring growth of these other tastier plants. In my food forest grove area some more clearing needs to be done, but I am seeing seedlings emerge of some of the surrounding hackberry and black cherry, as well as honeysuckle.
