You can surrender your cat by bring him to an open admissions shelter or rescue organization. If ensuring your cat ends up adopted into a loving home is important to you, there is another option that will help your cat be seen by millions of potential adopters.
When did KC Pet Project take over management of the city shelter?
Within just a few months, KC Pet Project was formed as an entirely new nonprofit organization, took over sheltering operations on January 1, 2012 with almost no resources, including only a handful of donors, staff, and volunteers, and no established programs.
Does KC Pet Project take cats?
Yes it is! Kitten season for our area is typically from April-October during warmer months when cats go into heat. There are times when 3-5 litters of kittens will arrive in a day at KC Pet Project. It’s important that if you see outdoor cats in your area, to make sure they’re spayed or neutered.

Where can I adopt a small dog from KC pet project?
Small dogs, puppies, and specialty breeds go quickly here at KC Pet Project. If your schedule allows, you are encouraged to visit our dogs here at the shelter, as we often times have these dogs but they are on stray hold.
What is the euthanasia rate at the Kansas City pet project?
Prior to KC Pet Project assuming operation of this shelter, it was known as the city’s “dog pound” operated by Kansas City animal control employees. Euthanasia rates of 60% – 70% for the overall animal population and 98% euthanasia rates for cats were the norm. As recently as 2008, only 38% of those pets made it out alive.
