How do you teach coins to first graders?
A good way to teach them is to sort their coins by value and use as many of the biggest value coins as they can before they have to switch to the next value down (for example, use quarters to make the number as high as possible without going over until they need to switch to dimes or nickels).
How do you introduce coins?
When you actually introduce counting money with coins, start with only two kinds of coins (ex: nickels and pennies.) Some students will need to practice with only two coins for a longer time. Allow them to count real coins in a small group, or play games with only nickels and pennies.

How many lessons are there in 1st grade coin collecting?
First grade spends 10 lessons on coins and 10 lessons on graphing. This is why I recommend the kindergarten version of the unit if you want to go in depth and spend longer on each coin. If you are rocking and rolling in the money department, then the first grade unit will fit your needs well!
