What temperature should I set my Bair Hugger?
The alphanumeric display shows the temperature at the end of the Bair Hugger warming unit hose in degrees Celsius. Press the 32°C (Low), 38°C (Med), or 43°C (High) button to select the desired temperature. Press the Ambient button to supply room temperature air.
Which way does a Bair Hugger blanket go?
Always attach the hose to a Bair Hugger blanket before providing therapy. 4 Do not place the non-perforated side of the blanket on the patient. Thermal injury may result. Always place the perforated side (the side with small holes) toward the patient.
Can you put a blanket over a Bair Hugger?
Once the Bair Hugger® is on, a cotton blanket or sheet may be placed on top of the forced-air blanket. This will help minimize heat loss from the system and keep the forced-air blanket centered on the infant or child.
Do Bair Huggers increase infection?
A 2013 study published in The Bone & Joint Journal found that waste heat from forced-air warming blankets such as the Bair Hugger, “can increase the temperature and concentration of airborne particles” around patients in operating rooms, increasing the chance of infection.
How does a forced-air warming device work?
Forced-air warming promotes convective heat transfer by moving warm air across the skin, so the blanket provides thermoregulation at a lower temperature.
Can you use a Bair Hugger to cool a patient?
Air-circulating cooling blankets (Polar Air and Bair Hugger) Should not be used for cooling, only for skin counterwarming. Even at lowest temperature setting the induction speed is no higher than simple skin exposure (≈0.5°C/h).
Why might use of a Bair Hugger sometimes be necessary?
Why do doctors use Bair Hugger warming blankets during surgery? Surgeons use warming blankets like the Bair Hugger to keep patients’ body temperatures from dropping too low during surgery. Hypothermia is a serious complication of surgery.
Can Bair Hugger cause hypotension?
Forced air rewarming (Bair Hugger) blanket Hypotension may occur during rewarming, probably a consequence of peripheral vasodilation. Afterdrop—This refers to a drop in core body temperature during rewarming.
Why are Bair Huggers used?
The primary use of Bair Hugger Blankets is to prevent hypothermia in surgical patients by maintaining normothermia, or a patient’s normal body temperature. The area of the body that will be operated on should not be exposed to the warm air from the blankets, so blankets are shaped to warm the other parts of the body.
Who invented Bair Paws?
The inventor of Bair Hugger warming blankets, also called forced air warming blankets (FAW), is warning of the risk for infections the device could cause when used during orthopedic surgeries. Dr. Scott D. Augustine invented the Bair Hugger warming blanket and introduced it in 1988.
What are warming devices?
Various warming methods, such as warm blankets, forced-air warmers and circulating water mattresses, are currently used to prevent and treat mild perioperative hypothermia. All are cutaneous approaches that rely on heating the peripheral tissues in order to increase the thermal core temperature.
