Over the course of the war, B-29s flew 20,000 sorties and dropped 200,000 tonnes (180,000 tons) of bombs. B-29 gunners were credited with shooting down 27 enemy aircraft. In turn 78 B-29 were lost; 57 B-29 and reconnaissance variants were lost in action and 21 were non-combat losses.
What happened to the Kee Bird B-29?
The aircraft was largely destroyed on the ground, with the Kee Bird’s fuselage being almost completely destroyed. When the lake thawed in the spring, it was feared that the wreckage (with nearly intact wing panels and engines) would sink to the bottom.

In 1995 a salvage team works to remove Kee Bird, a Boeing B-29 that had force-landed in 1947, from Greenland’s icy grip. When a B-29 crew got lost in weather over the Arctic and came down on a frozen Greenland lake, it led to an ill-fated recovery attempt 48 years later.

Able to fly over 3,000 miles, up to 16 hours, these bombers were just what the Allies needed to target Japan.
