What is counted in a word count?
Word count includes everything in the main body of the text (including headings, tables, citations, quotes, lists, etc). The list of references, appendices and footnotes2 are NOT included in the word count unless it is clearly stated in the coursework instructions that the module is an exception to this rule.
How do you count words without citations?
If you wish to exclude your EndNote citations from your word count, you can do this by creating a new style that hides all citations. You can do this yourself in EndNote by selecting ‘Edit’ and ‘Output styles’, then ‘Create a new style’. In the new window select ‘File’ then ‘Save as’ and give the blank style a name.
