How to build deck steps without stringers?

1) Determine the overall length and width of the first step frame. The largest step frame will be on the bottom. 2) Once all boards are cut, mark your long frame boards at 16” on center for the bracing. 3) Attach remaining bracers into the frame by nailing or screwing through the 2×6 frame and into each bracing board. 4) Subtract the length of a single stair from the overall length of the last frame. This will be the length of your second stair. 5) First attach the two ends inside the 48” front and back pieces to create the outer frame. Next, fasten the remaining two inside bracers into position. 6) Repeat steps 4 and 5 for all remaining step frames. 7) There are two ways to fasten the box steps together. You could nail/screw through the back of each box frame and directly into the deck. 8) It is now time to install the decking boards.

How to build a staircase?

– Measure each riser separately. – Cut each riser, leaving an 8 to 12-degree bevel along the edge where it meets the tread. – Nail the riser to the framing beneath it. – Cut the tread to length and turn the width to allow for a 1-inch overhang. – Apply wood glue to the step and attach the tread. – Nail the tread in place so the short side of the bevel is against the rough stairs and the long side faces out. – Repeat until you reach the top of your staircase.

How is a stair tread measured?

For a typical staircase, the stair tread must measure 8 1/4 inches to 9 inches deep, measure 1 inch thick or more and have a maximum 1 1/2-inch-deep nosing.
