For gaming, the benefit you get from a sound card is the 7.1 virtual sound option. Enabling it somewhat expands the sound stage but it sounds really weird and not natural. From my experience (I have 7.1 sound card), i keep it off even in FPS games. For gaming, I would recommend getting a good pair of headphones.
