Re: Staying at Exarchia? In general terms, it is safe to stay there. I have single female friends who live there and my and I friends go often without any problems. Having said that, there are better and more convenient areas to stay at.
Is Gazi Athens safe?
It is wise to ask if an area is safe and Gazi is a safe area as all Athens is in general. There are some more run down areas and some areas where there is more pitty crime than others in Athens as it happens with any major city.
Can I drink tap water in Athens?
A lot of people visiting the country wonder if they can drink tap water in Greece. The tap water is not potable throughout the country. Although it is perfectly safe to drink water from the tap in Athens and Thessaloniki it is better to ask in all the other places or even better buy bottled water which is fairly cheap.

Athens is certainly not cheap, but it is not very expensive either. In comparison to other European capitals, we would say that Athens is somewhere in the middle. It all depends on what type of traveler you are and how much budget you wish to spend during your visit.

Shorts. It is acceptable to wear shorts, whether you are a woman or a man. Also, if you plan to do a walking tour of Athens, ditch the shorts and opt for a dress – if you are a woman – or a pair of long pants – if you are a man. Shorts are acceptable on the beach or when going from the beach to the shops near-by.
