Lightbox: manufacturing technology and specifics of application in outdoor advertising

Lightboxes, which are an important element of outdoor advertising, is a structure with a rigid frame and a light-transmitting front panel on which the advertising image is printed. This popular advertising format provides high visibility at night thanks to the inbuilt backlighting.

Frame and materials

The frame of the light box https://novodek.com/products/lightboxes/ is made of profiled tubes welded together. This technique ensures not only the strength of the structure, but also protection against corrosion, thanks to the subsequent priming and painting of the surface. An excellent alternative to welded boxes for lightboxes is an aluminium profile. It is more expensive, but it is not afraid of rust and is more aesthetically attractive.

Depending on the size and operating conditions, aluminium composite and painted galvanised sheet are used for manufacturing side surfaces.

Face Coating

Lightbox face cover can be made of different polymeric materials such as polystyrene, acrylic glass, BackLit banner. Durable cellular polycarbonate is also popular. The material has a low cost and is successfully used in all weather conditions.

Internal illumination

The lamps in lightboxes have to fulfil special requirements as they are in a confined space close to the printed images. In the past, only fluorescent sources with a cool white glow were used for backlighting, providing excellent colour rendering. Today, LEDs are more efficient and cost-effective. They are characterised by:

  • high brightness;
  • low power consumption;
  • absence of thermal radiation.

LED lighting lightboxes will cost more than fluorescent lighting. However, in the long term it is more favourable, because it is characterized by durability and will not require frequent replacement. Neon lighting is also used in complex designs.

Manufacturing stages

The production of light boxes consists of several steps. Among them:

  • Developing the design of the lightbox, taking into account its size and configuration.
  • Cutting the profile according to the dimensions and shape of the future design.
  • Assembly of the frame. Connection of profile pipes by welding and, if necessary, reinforcement with stiffening ribs.
  • Installation of the back wall to stabilise the structure.
  • Mounting of backlighting. Placement and connection of light sources inside the lightbox.

Installation of the front panel with the image to give the advertising product an aesthetically attractive appearance.

Technologies of lightboxes manufacturing allow to create various constructions suitable for different locations and volumes of advertising information. The choice of materials and technologies is determined not only by aesthetic preferences, but also by the requirements for the functionality of the advertising medium and its durability depending on the location.
