Should you always mix in key?
Treat keymixing as a tool not a rule. Mix in key if the opportunity presents itself, but find another way to mix in a new track if it doesn’t – a way that gives you the chance to pay the track you know is right rather than one you know is in key. Trust your ears – if it sounds rubbish, it is rubbish.

You can mix between them. That gives you four great options. If you’re looking at your Mixed In Key results and trying to decide what song to play next, look for something that’s adjacent to your current Key Code. All of those songs will be harmonically compatible.
What is the Camelot scale?
The Camelot Wheel, invented by Mark Davis and part of Mixed In Key, is a color-coded system that helps you figure out which keys are compatible. Each key is assigned a code number from one to twelve, like the hours around a clock. The wheel is visually designed to help you learn harmonic mixing.
Can you mix songs in different keys?
Here’s how it works: You find the key of the tune you’re currently playing on the wheel, and you can mix any tune into it that is the same key, or an adjacent key on the wheel. So you can move left or right one segment, or in or out one segment (you can’t move diagonally).
