What are BedZED features?
Some of the BedZED features include multicolored wind funnels, or wind cowls – which provide passive ventilation – sustainable building, materials, low energy appliances and fixtures, a residents-only car pool, and every part of the roofscape is used for passive solar, PV’s, roof gardens or extensive Sedum coir mats.
Why was BedZED built?
BedZED: The story of a pioneering eco-village BedZED was designed to achieve big reductions in climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions and water use. We wanted to make it easy for people living there to have a greener, lower impact lifestyle, relying less on private cars and producing less waste.

BedZED was created by BioRegional, an entrepreneurial charity, along with the Peabody Trust and Bill Dunster Architects. It comprises 100 apartments and houses, and approximately 2,500 sq m of office space. As its name implies, BedZED aimed to be the world’s first large-scale, carbon-neutral housing complex.

How is BedZED powered?
Self Sufficient Heating and Electricity BedZED receives its power from a small-scale combined heat and power plant. With combined heat and power energy generation, this energy itself is harnessed and put into the system, used to heat water for all the properties, distributed using extra insulated pipes.
